The company, which has its North American headquarters in Greenville, said the tire is being manufactured at its facilities in the Upstate and Lexington, plus a half-dozen other locations.

Pete Selleck, Michelin's new North American chairman and president, told reporters the tire’s design “meets the demands of Americans who are enduring difficult economic times and are insisting on top value for their money in a way not seen for decades.”

Michelin claims the tire, called the Defender, is the best standard passenger car tire that it has ever made and fits most standard passenger cars on the road today.

“It combines safety, longevity and fuel-efficiency in one high-performing tire, without having to sacrifice one performance for another,” the company said.

Michelin said the tire outlasts a leading competitor by up to 21,000 miles and stops up to 31 feet shorter compared to another competitor.

Due to its low-rolling resistance for better fuel efficiency, Michelin calculates that the Defender tire can help drivers save up to $250 in fuel at $3.50 per gallon over the life of the tires.

The tire will be available to consumers in April.

For the 24th year, Michelin is the official tire sponsor of the auto show, which runs through Jan. 22.
