Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corp. will expand its West Columbia headquarters, adding 36,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The $12.5 million expansion is expected to create 125 jobs by June 2018.
Nephron, a manufacturer of sterile inhalation medications, recently relocated its headquarters from Orlando, Florida to its $320 million facility in West Columbia, which employs 640 people.
“Nephron Pharmaceuticals has been an excellent job provider and bastion of economic prosperity for Lexington County,” Lexington County Council chairman Todd Cullum said in a news release. “Their new expansion is exciting and encouraging, as it means their good work will continue to produce positive results for people in our state as well as nationwide.”
The expansion reflects the growth in the company’s existing respiratory therapy drug portfolio and in its 503B Outsourcing Division. Nephron has developed 30 new products in 2017 to help address a nationwide drug shortage.
Damage from Hurricane Maria to pharmaceutical plants in Puerto Rico worsened the problem for U.S. hospitals. Nephron responded with 24-7 production of products affected by the shortage, including sterile small-volume parenteral solutions.
“The improvement of the facility will help us meet our commitment to solve the critical problem of drug supply shortages impacting healthcare in the United States,” Nephron CEO Lou Kennedy said.
