A Finland-based chemical company is investing $20 million to expand operations at its Eastover facility.

Richland County economic development officials announced Kemira is expanding its plant on Water Station Road in Eastover.

Kemira was founded in 1920 and employs more than 4,900 people worldwide. The company uses chemistry to create substances that enhance the performance of pulp and paper, water, oil and gas.  Its chemical products are used to strengthen paper and board products, maximize yield from energy sources and improve hygiene of water and food packaging.

“This investment in our plant demonstrates our long term commitment to the pulp and paper industry, our customers and the dedicated employees who work hard to make our business a success,” Billy Ford, Kemira’s senior vice president of commercial North America, said in a news release.

Richland County Council Chair Paul Livingston said Kemira has been doing business in the county for more than 20 years.

The company expects the expansion to be completed in 2020.
