Richland County ranks as the state’s fifth-most generous when it comes to charitable giving, according to a new study by financial technology company SmartAsset.
The study measured the percentage of net income donated as well as the proportion of taxpayers in a county who gave money to nonprofits in 2016.
In Richland County, 55.3% of the population gave 36.1% of its net income for an overall index score of 53.5%.
Beaufort County ranked as the state’s most charitable, with 66.6% of its population giving 32.8% of its net income for an index of 58.2%.
Greenville ranked second (54.8%) and Charleston third (54.5%).
The study used tax return data to calculate net income and total number of tax returns with charitable donations to determine population percentages.
