Black Philanthropy Month events planned for August

Central Carolina Community Foundation is celebrating Black Philanthropy Month with several local events in August.

Black Philanthropy Month was created in 2011 by Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network as an annual global celebration of African-descent giving. This year’s theme is Let’s Make History.

“We believe that the diversity of our communities is a fundamental strength of our region,” JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said in a news release. “We are proud to celebrate the amazing work of our region’s diverse multicultural philanthropists.”

Events being held this month include the Black Entrepreneur Survival Summit on Aug. 23. Hosted by COLA Gives, South Carolina’s first African American Giving Circle, the summit will share advice on creating a business plan, starting a business, identifying funding sources, marketing techniques and legal requirement.

The month will culminate in the second annual Giving Black Day on Aug. 28. The initiative, led by the Young, Black, and Giving Back Institute in Washington, D.C., encourages support of black-led and black-benefiting organizations.

Registered nonprofits within CCCF’s 11-county footprint which raise $250 or more and meet nonprofit eligibility requirements will be entered into a drawing for one of eight $250 prizes provided by the foundation.
