Strawberry to speak at recovery organization fundraiser

Former Major League Baseball player and four-time World Series champion Darryl Strawberry will headline a February fundraising event for Lexington County nonprofit recovery organization The Courage Center.

Strawberry, an eight-time National League All-Star, battled substance abuse during and after his baseball career. He will speak at The Courage Center’s annual Valentine’s Day celebrity breakfast on Feb. 14 at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Strawberry and cannot wait to hear his powerful story of recovery,” Adrienne Bellinger, executive director of The Courage Center, said in a news release. “His personal journey and message of hope, resilience and redemption are the same lifelines our young people and families find through The Courage Center’s recovery coaching and support services.”

Strawberry’s latest book, Don’t Give Up On Me, delves into his struggles with addiction. 

“I do know that in my life, all my successes, failures and experiences have brought me to where I am today,” Strawberry said in the release. “My strength and the reason that I am here today is proven through the experiences and conditions I have endured.”

This is the third year The Courage Center’s breakfast fundraiser will be held. Last year, 400-plus community supporters raised more than $75,000 for the nonprofit, according to the release.
