Donations increased by more that $1.2 million compared with last year for the annual Midlands Gives charitable challenge held Tuesday across the region.

The Central Carolina Community Foundation reported more than $3.32 million was raised during the daylong push this year, compared with $2.03 million the previous year, representing a nearly 64% year-over-year increase.

The challenge began in 2014 as part of a nationwide focus on philanthropy. Last year, 14,272 donations were made to 410 registered charities. This year, 22,477 donations were made to 412 charities.

The donations were spread out over hundreds of nonprofit organizations. The 10 that received the most money represented $581,223 of the total, with A Moment of Hope receiving the most money with $85,525.

Several companies also offered prizes and incentives, including financial matches, for charities that were able to hit a certain level of giving, organizers said. Participating companies included Dominion Energy, Aflac, Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corp., Truist Bank, BlueCross BlueShield of S.C., South State Bank and Nelson Mullins, among others.
