Weekly interviews to highlight Black Philanthropy Month

Friday will mark the beginning of a series of online interviews celebrating Black Philanthropy Month in the Midlands.

The interviews, conducted by Central Carolina Community Foundation staff members, will share stories of Black philanthropic impact on the region. The interviews, which will air live every Friday in August at 10 a.m. on the foundation’s Facebook page, are part of the month-long celebration of a national initiative recognizing African American and African-descent giving.

The month culminates in Give 8/28, a national day of giving supporting Black-led and Black-benefiting organizations. Set for Aug. 28, the third annual effort is led by the Young, Black, and Giving Back Institute in Washington, D.C.

Registered nonprofits within Central Carolina Community Foundation’s 11-county service area which raise $500 or more on Aug. 28 through the Give 8/28 or Midlands Gives platforms will be entered into a drawing for one of 10 $500 matching grant prizes provided by the Foundation.

“We believe diversity is one of our region’s strengths and should be celebrated,” JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said in a news release. “We also believe that our actions should reflect this belief. Black Philanthropy Month and Give 8/28 provide an opportunity for our community to recognize the impact of Black philanthropy and financially support Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits serving our region.”

This year’s Black Philanthropy Month theme, Foresight 20/20, emphasizes the importance of present-day decisions taken and investments made in shaping the future.

Black Philanthropy Month was founded in 2011 by Jackie Copeland-Carson and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network.
