Foundation awards $359,000 in grants to S.C. nonprofits

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina recently awarded grants totaling $359,000 to 46 nonprofit organizations throughout the state. Eight Midlands-area nonprofits were among the recipients.

The nonprofits work to reduce poverty in South Carolina by meeting immediate needs and working for systemic change, according to a news release.

“Since its inception in 1996, Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has been addressing the root causes and effects of poverty in South Carolina,” Tom Keith, foundation president and CEO, said in a news release. “Nonprofits throughout the state are using these grants to create a path for positive, groundbreaking work that strengthens families and communities experiencing poverty.”

Midlands-area programs receiving grants and the counties they serve are:

Kershaw Area Resource Exchange: Chesterfield, Kershaw and Lancaster  

Dyslexia Resource Center: Richland, Sumter, Kershaw, Lexington

EmmanuWheel: Lexington, Richland, Saluda

Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County: Kershaw

Dickerson Children’s Advocacy Center Inc.: Lexington, Saluda

Richland Library: Richland County

Central Midlands Justice Ministry: Richland, Lexington

United Way of the Midlands: Richland
