After a record-breaking 2020, Midlands Gives returns May 4 with 480 nonprofit participants, the most in the event’s seven-year history.

The annual online giving event is hosted by Central Carolina Community Foundation, which distributes grants and scholarships and connects philanthropical leaders and resources in 11 Midlands counties. Gifts of $10 or more will help organizations in those counties provide health services, arts and culture resources and other community outreach.

A March 2021 survey by Columbia-based nonprofit Together SC found that 59% of S.C. nonprofits believed they could survive for six months or less without additional funding.

“The pandemic has forced many local nonprofits to expand or redesign their services while dealing with reduced revenue,” JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said in a news release. “They have displayed remarkable resilience, and the dollars they received from our community during Midlands Gives contributed to their resilience. Although we are at a turning point in the pandemic, the nonprofits that have served us well this year still need our ongoing support and partnership.”

Since its 2014 inception, Midlands Gives has raised $12.6 million for hundreds of local nonprofits, including a record $3.3 million in 2020. The 2021 event will take place online from 6 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.

A list of participating nonprofits is available online at www.MidlandsGives.org/Nonprofits.

Early giving opened on April 1 at www.MidlandsGives.org, and more than $20,000 has already been raised for 49 nonprofits. All donations made through May 4 will count toward 2021 totals, according to the release.

Midlands Gives Day will be live streamed on the foundation’s Facebook page.
