“One of my favorite quotes that mirrors my personal philosophy was stated by Oprah Winfrey: ‘My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.’”

Rosalyn W. Frierson Smith

City of birth: Columbia

Education: B.S. and J.D., University of South Carolina

Your job: State court administrator (S.C. Judicial Department) and substitute Municipal Court judge for the City of Columbia

The best thing about my job: Is the satisfaction gained from using my legal training to address a variety of issues and the opportunity to solve problems.

Community involvement: Member, S.C.Bar Association, American Bar Association, S.C. Black Lawyers Association, Richland County Bar Association, S.C. Bar House of Delegates, S.C. Access to Justice Commission, S.C. Commission on Alternate Dispute Resolution; SC Lawyer Editorial Board, editor 2014-2016; Conference of State Court Administrators, president 2011-2012; National Center for State Courts Board of Directors, vice chair, 2011-2012; S.C. Women Lawyers Association, president, 2007; S.C. Bar Pro Bono volunteer. Also, Columbia Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., president 2007-2011; member, and volunteer, St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church; trustee, Palmetto Health Board of Directors; Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, 2008-2015; volunteer reader at Greenview Elementary School

Something I wish I’d known earlier in my career: If there is one thing I could have done differently knowing what I know now, it would be to have pursued a legal degree earlier than I ultimately did.

Advice to other women: Never underestimate the value of connecting or networking with other people. Be flexible in setting your goals and expect that change will occur, even to your best-developed plans. The best way to prepare for your future goals is to do your very best in the present. Do not envy other people’s success, what God has planned for you is for you.
