Cason Development Group is developing a two-story, 6,800-square-foot office building at 1717 Marion St. for Columbia law firm Cavanaugh & Thickens, which is relocating its offices from the Congaree Vista.

The Class A building in Columbia’s central business district is scheduled to be completed this summer.

Eric Cavanaugh of Cavanaugh & Thickens said in a news release. “This building will provide us with more opportunities to grow and will allow us to better serve those injured in accidents throughout the Midlands and all throughout the state of South Carolina.”

Boyer Construction is the project general contractor. Seed Architecture is handling design and The LandPlan Group South is the engineer.

The lot, on the west side of Marion Street between Blanding and Laurel streets, was most recently a parking lot. It was also formerly the site of the Beth Shalom Synagogue from 1935 until the 1970s.

“This project has been particularly exciting for us, as much of our work inside of Columbia has been centered around reviving and repurposing existing and oftentimes historic buildings,” said Frank Dougherty, Cason development coordinator. “This project gave us the freedom to design a new building to blend the commercial and residential feel of the surrounding historic area. We spent a lot of time on the design to make sure the building fit in with the historic properties around it.”

Cavanaugh & Thickens is currently located at 1324 Gadsden St.
