Groundbreaking set for senior rental property

SC Uplift Community Outreach, a state nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing for low- to moderate-income individuals and families, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its Legacy Home renovation project for older adults on Wednesday.

The collaborative effort between the federally exempt community development corporation, Richland County Community Development, the University of South Carolina’s SmartHOME Center for Economic Excellence, and Palmetto Health will provide a two-bedroom, one-bath home designated as an affordable senior rental property at 3613 Judy St.

The home, which will feature energy efficient appliances, anti-fatigue flooring, a telehealth system and a security and automation system, will be rented to a senior age 62 or older whose income is 60% or below area median income. It will be available for occupancy in October, and rental applications are currently being accepted.

Founded in 2008, SC Uplift Community Outreach has received approximately $726,000 to develop Midlands housing and has also helped 60 seniors with home repairs.
