If you think coffee plus cats equals purr-fection, you’re in luck: A cat cafe will be opening soon in West Columbia.

Catitude Cat Cafe will open at 118 State St. in the next few weeks. Patrons can have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine while spending time with a feline friend.

The idea for the cafe came to Jaime Ortega as he traveled the country for his job.

"I would go to places like New York and Washington, D.C. and find a cat cafe because I missed my girlfriend and her cat," Ortega said.

Ortega said the cafe will feature beer and wine along with assorted pastries. Patrons will also be able to purchase cat toys at the establishment.

"We plan to have dedicated study rooms with whiteboards for USC students," Ortega said, a December graduate of the University of South Carolina.

Adoptions will be possible as well through a partnership with Pets Inc.

"All the cats are being provided by Pets Inc. It's a win-win for the cats of Columbia," Ortega said.

The café will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Cat lovers in the Lowcountry already have a place to hang with furry friends. Human visitors to the Pounce Cat Cafe and Wine Bar in Charleston can sample coffee, pastries, wine and beer. The cafe partners with Charleston Animal Society to make cats available for adoption.
