Food Lion’s plans to remodel nearly 100 stores throughout South Carolina this summer are being completed store by store.

In March, the Salisbury, N.C.-based company announced it was remodeling 92 stores in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Florence and Columbia, a capital investment of $158 million. The plan also includes hiring 2,000 additional associates, according to a news release.

Work has been completed on some stores already, including one location in Lexington. The stores have remained open during normal operating hours during the renovation.

Six stores — in Andrews, Columbia, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown and Ravenel — will have walk-in produce coolers designed to keep produce fresher longer. Store deli bakery departments will offer hand-battered fried chicken, and Food Lion plans to stock more local products such as beer and wine and natural and organic selections.

Once the South Carolina stores have been remodeled, Food Lion will have remodeled 80% of its network of more than 1,000 stores. Food Lion operates stores in a 10-state area and employs more than 63,000 people.
