Newk’s Eatery has closed its restaurant on Gervais Street in the Vista.

A spokesperson for Mississippi-based, fast-casual chain told the Columbia Regional Business Report the Columbia location, at 707-A Gervais St., closed “due to a decision between Newk’s and the former franchise owner to terminate their agreement.”

Newk’s opened the Vista location in late 2015.

“We have valued our time being part of the Columbia community for the past four years,” Blair Krumme said via email.

Krumme said the company has no plans for new locations in Columbia but is open to future opportunities.

Newk’s has an S.C. location in Summerville, according to its website.

The Vista location opened in October 2015, donating a percentage of opening-day sales to the Ray Tanner Foundation, an organization benefitting economically and medically disadvantaged children founded by USC athletic director Ray Tanner and his wife Karen.

At the time of the Vista store’s opening, Newk’s had more than 85 locations in 13 states, with plans to expand to more than 200 locations by the end of 2018.

Newk’s was founded in 2004 by the team behind the McAlister’s Deli franchise. Its menu includes fresh-tossed salads, California-style pizzas, hot toasted sandwiches, kettle batch soups and scratch-made desserts as well as wine and beer.
