German-based grocery store chain Lidl  will hold a grand opening for its first Richland County location Sept 12.

Lidl, which has a Lexington County store at 5215 Sunset Blvd., submitted site plans for locations in Columbia and Lexington in 2016. Its first Columbia location is set to open at 1401 Summit Parkway, according to a news release from the company.

A ribbon cutting will take place at 7:40 a.m.

"We're confident that we will be able to offer a great shoppinge experience with high quality and low prices to shoppers in the area," Columbia store manager Thelma Curiel said in a news release. "The team and I are excited to introduce Lidl to the Columbia community."

The Columbia store will be open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., Monday through Sunday. The first 100 customers at the new store will receive gift cards ranging from $5 to $100, and shoppers can sample Lidl products including fresh baked goods and private label brands.

The Summit Parkway location, proposed for the corner of Summit Parkway and Hardscrabble Road, is one of 25 new East Coast stores Lidl expects to open by spring 2020.

“We are committed to long-term growth in the United States and always strive to locate in the most convenient locations for our shoppers,” said Johannes Fieber, CEO of Lidl US. “These new stores are part of the next steps in our U.S. expansion. Over the next year, we are excited to introduce more customers to Lidl’s award-winning quality, reliably low prices and convenient shopping experience.”

Six new N.C. locations are slated to open, including stores in Charlotte and Raleigh, while the company is closing stores in Rockingham and Kinston. New locations are also planned for Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, bringing Lidl’s U.S. presence to more than 100 stores and creating 1,000-plus jobs across nine states.

The chain operates more than 10,500 stores in 29 countries.
