National retail chain files for bankruptcy – these South Carolina stores will close

Six Tuesday Morning stores across South Carolina will close in the wake of the Dallas-based discount home goods chain’s Tuesday announcement that it has filed bankruptcy for the second time in three years.

The closings include one in the greater Columbia area, two in the Charleston area and one in the Upstate, as well as closings in Aiken and Florence.

Store closures nationwide were announced on the chain’s website Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Tuesday Morning currently has about 480 stores nationwide, down from more than 700 prior to the pandemic.

The company is the latest nationwide retailer to experience financial distress. Retailer Party City recently filed for bankruptcy, while Bed Bath and Beyond recently announced store closings nationwide, including two locations in Columbia.

South Carolina which will close later this year include those located in Harbison Court at 264 Harbison Blvd. in Columbia, 6101 Calhoun Memorial Highway at the Town and Country Plaza in Easley, 975 Savannah Highway at the St. Andrews Shopping Center in Charleston and at 680 Long Point Road in the Belle Hall Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant.

The chain will have 13 stores remaining statewide after these stores close.

The chain’s leadership announced Tuesday it has secured $51 million in financing to keep operations running and plans to close underperforming stores and cut costs nationwide, according to reports from the company.

Tuesday Morning first filed for bankruptcy in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  The chain currently has about 480 stores nationwide, down from more than 700 prior to the pandemic.
