Two Columbia roads will lose direct access to North Main Street as part of a road-widening project.

Beginning today, North Main access from Lamar Street and Fern Avenue will be closed, according to a news release from Richland County.

The project, funded by the Richland County Transportation Penny Program, is establishing a new traffic pattern at the nearby intersection of North Main and Miller Avenue. The work is also improving draining and adding sidewalks at the intersection.

Detours for the new traffic pattern will be installed today. The detours will be in place throughout the duration of the project.

To access Fern Avenue, drivers can enter via the North Main intersection with Miller Avenue, then turn onto Ridgewood Avenue and then Byrd Avenue. To access Lamar Street, drivers can turn from North Main onto Kortright Street.

Upon completion of the project, slated for August 2020, the detour routes will become permanent.
