Construction is expected to cause delays for drivers on Clemson Road in northeast Richland County for parts of the next week.

Storm drainage is being installed on Clemson Road between Old Clemson Road and Chimneyridge Drive starting Friday, according to a news release from Richland County. Asphalt replacement is scheduled for the same stretch of road on Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting.

Richland County transportation officials warn the road work could cause significant traffic delays because of lane closures.

The work is part of a project to widen Clemson Road from two to five lanes between Old Clemson Road and Sparkleberry Crossing. Shared paths for bicyclists and pedestrians are being added between Old Clemson Road and Chimneyridge Drive.

Work on the project began in early 2019, and transportation officials estimate the construction is about 50% completed. The project is expected to be completed in early 2021.
