Two people were injured when a freight train derailed around 8:20 a.m. Monday in a wooded area near Longwood Drive off Shop Road in Columbia.

The derailment caused a gasoline fuel spill that has since been contained, according to Columbia Fire Department spokesman Mike DeSumma.

Pineview Industrial Park, home to Mark Anthony Brewing and China Jushi, is located near the intersection of Longwood Drive and Shop Road.

According to a spokesperson from Norfolk Southern, the head end of one of the company’s trains running from Atlanta to Charleston derailed after striking a non-Norfolk Southern locomotive that had derailed on its own tracks next to the Norfolk Southern mainline.

The spokesperson said two crew members on the train were taken to a local hospital and a full investigation into to the cause will be made to the Federal Railroad Administration. Norfolk Southern crews and contractors are currently at the site conducting cleanup and repair operations to get the track reopened, along with crews from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Norfolk Southern officials released a statement expressing gratitude to those who responded to the derailment.

“Norfolk Southern is grateful to the first responders in Columbia for their quick response and taking care of our crew who remain at a local hospital,” the statement said. “We have responded to the scene with additional personnel and partners to begin the clean-up and repairs to reopen the track and appreciate the public’s patience during this process.”
