The Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority is accepting applications for The COMET Academy, a leadership development program designed to help business and community leaders learn more about how public transit works.

Most of the Academy sessions will be held virtually and last 60 minutes, according to a news release. The classes will meet once a week at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning March 6 and run through April 3, with graduation on April 17. The first meeting will be an in-person introduction at COMET headquarters at 3613 Lucius Road in Columbia.

The five-week intensive program will offer an in-depth behind the scenes look at the COMET transit system, with the goal of helping participants become advocates for public transit and possibly take active roles as potential members of the COMET board of directors. The curriculum will include topics such as history, financing, program partnerships and organizational structure.

“It is our plan to empower community and business leaders with knowledge of the inner workings, history and future goals of public transit in the Midlands,” said LeRoy DesChamps, COO of The COMET. “Our past sessions received an overwhelming response, and we’re excited to again be able to present this program to the community.”

Space in the program is limited and the deadline to apply is March 2. Applications for the COMET Academy can be found online.
