Millennials moving to Columbia

Columbia is the nation's second-most popular destination for millennials, according to a study by financial data website SmartAsset.

The study analyzed 2016 U.S. Census Bureau migration data for 217 cities in all 50 states and found that 6,937 more millennials — people between the ages of 20 and 34 — moved to S.C.’s capital city than left it. Around 8,000 millennials came to Columbia from out of state, the study found.

Columbia was not ranked in the top 10 in last years study, the first SmartAsset conducted on the topic, which analyzed 2015 census data.

The most millennials moved to Seattle in 2016, which saw a net migration of 7,302. Three Virginia cities — Newport News (sixth, 5,667), Norfolk (ninth, 4,997) and Virginia Beach (10th, 4,984) — made the top 10.

Among the states, Washington ranked first, with a net millennial migration of 39,590, ahead of second-place Texas (33,650).

South Carolina did not make the state top 10, though North Carolina (9,647) was seventh.

In total, the study found that 13,352 millennials moved to Columbia in 2016, while 6,415 left the city.
