A nine-week summer camp, hosted by Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and councilman Ed McDowell, will introduce youth in Latimer Manor to educational and recreational activities available in the city.

The camp, which begins Friday, will include activities such as a tour of City Roots, Columbia’s sustainable, urban farm, and a trip to the EdVenture Children’s Museum. Participants will also have access to books and fresh produce at the Richland Library during its weekly farmers market and take part in a financial literacy day at the S.C. State Museum, during which they will receive bank accounts through the city in collaboration with South State Bank.

“There are so many fantastic programs and resources available to young people in our city, but not every child is exposed to them or has the means to experience them,” Benjamin said in a news release. “We’re excited to introduce the kids in the camp to some of the neatest things Columbia has to offer for youth and engage their minds so that they’ll also learn over their summer break.”

Twenty children ages 8-12 will take part in “Kidz Summer in the City” each Friday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The camp, which will include meals, concludes on Aug. 10 with a tour of local colleges and universities.
