Richland Library, in partnership with Palmetto Health, will give every baby born in Richland County during September a library card and a book.

The initiative celebrates September as national library card sign-up month, and one local mother will receive a gift basket with a 12-month supply of books and prizes. That winner will be announced Tuesday.

The library card will come with a list of early literacy tips for parents. The American Library Association’s website says that signing up for a library card can promote academic achievement and lifelong learning.

The Disney Pixar superhero family The Incredibles are the honorary chairs for the monthlong event.

Palmetto Health is a sponsor of the Reach Out and Read program, which incorporates books into pediatric care, and is the presenting sponsor for the Columbia Fireflies’ reading program.
