A Richland County businessman has been arrested and charged with four counts of failing to collect, account for, or pay withholding taxes.

Tyron J. Frazier, 50, of Lexington withheld $23,344 in income taxes from employees’ pay for tax years 2015-2018 but paid $1,967 in taxes, according to the S.C. Department of Revenue. Frazier issued W-2 forms to employees showing tax withholdings but filed S.C. Withholding Tax returns reporting no taxes were collected for those periods, according to a SCDOR news release.

Frazier was arrested Monday and is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center pending a bond hearing. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for each count, plus the cost of prosecution.

According to an arrest warrant, Frazier told SCDOR agents he was aware of his tax obligations but chose to pay other bills.
