Richland County will receive $1.6 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency as reimbursement for the cost of restoring sewer lines damaged by the 2015 flood.

The grant, funded through FEMA’s Public Assistance Grant program, represents the federal share of the total project cost of $2.2 million to restore sewer lines and connect manholes in the East Public Service District. The remainder of the financing will come from non-federal sources.

The funding is obligated directly to the state of South Carolina, FEMA said in a statement. After a review process and upon receipt of appropriate documentation, the state will provide funds to the county.

Thirty-five S.C. counties were designated for the FEMA funding after the severe flooding in October 2015. To date, FEMA has obligated more than $96.3 million to South Carolina under its public assistance program, according to a news release.
