S.C. initial unemployment claims drop in week

S.C. initial unemployment claims for the week ending Dec. 11 dropped by more than 500 from the previous week, falling to 1,261.  

Claims climbed to 1,770 the week before after falling to 776 over Thanksgiving.  

For the most recent week, Horry County recorded a state-high 174 first-time claims, while Greenville County saw 108. Richland County had 97 and Spartanburg County 64, according to data from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce

Since March 15, 2020, S.C. has seen 941,189 initial claims, with DEW paying out nearly $6.6 billion in a combination of state and federal unemployment benefits.  

Nationally, 206,000 first-time claims were filed, up 18,000 from the week before.
