COLUMBIA, SC — Architrave, an architecture firm renowned for exceptional historic renovations and tailored residential designs, is celebrating 35 years of shaping the architectural landscape in South Carolina’s Midlands and Lowcountry regions.

Recognized for its ability to integrate traditional Carolina styles with a modern flair, Architrave has curated a vast portfolio of custom home design, residential and commercial renovation, historical preservation and religious entity construction projects, leaving an indelible mark on the Palmetto State. Some examples of the firm’s work include the Historic University Hill renovation and the Canal Dime Savings Bank restoration, both in Columbia, and the Moon Tide residence on Kiawah Island.

A key part of Architrave’s process is to learn about the unique needs of each client and integrate that information into a design that reflects the client’s wishes, while respecting the project’s site and community. Using this client-centric approach, the firm places a high emphasis on building relationships and providing a single point of contact for every project.

“Our 35-year journey has been filled with many noteworthy projects, but ultimately, it’s the relationships we’ve built that matter most,” said Bill Marshall, executive vice president of Architrave. “It’s the trust, the handshakes, the stories shared over blueprints that truly define Architrave’s legacy.”

Tracing back its history, Architrave was founded in 1987 by Allen and Dale Marshall, an uncle and nephew team. Allen’s son, Bill Marshall, also worked for the firm in the early 1990s before pursuing a career in Charleston with the Architectural Review Boards at Kiawah Island and Daniel Island. After Allen’s passing in 2012, Dale and Bill, who rejoined the firm in 2009, took the helm, continuing to uphold the firm’s family-centric foundation with Dale as president and Bill as executive vice president. Justin Washburn, a licensed architect and LEED accredited professional, joined the practice in 2014. Dividing work between two offices, Dale and Justin primarily manage Columbia projects, while Bill leads projects in the Lowcountry.

“I remember Allen would say, ‘Everything is the result of a plan; nothing intentional happens without planning,’” said Dale Marshall, president of Architrave. “It’s understanding every part of the project matters, and the small details are just as important as the large ones.”

Beyond architecture, community service plays a significant role in Architrave’s mission. Dale serves on the Vista Guild Board of Directors as well as Historic Columbia’s Preservation Committee. He is also the chair of Historic Columbia’s Preservation Design Awards Committee and previously served on City of Columbia’s Design/Development Review Commission. Meanwhile, Bill is a consultant for several architectural review boards in the Charleston area and formerly served on the City of Charleston’s Commercial Corridor Design Review Board. In addition, Justin served as president of the Vista Night Rotary Club and as a member of the Columbia Museum of Art Contemporaries Board.

Over the years, Architrave has received numerous accolades, including multiple Best of Houzz awards and recognition from the Historic Columbia Foundation and The American Institute of Architects.
