ACRE program awards funding to 7 S.C. entrepreneurs
The S.C. Department of Agriculture's Agribusiness Center for Research and Entrepreneurship program awarded funding to businesses in six counties, including a meat delivery service in Chester County and a Gullah farming cooperative.
All S.C. counties declared drought-free
Recent rains led to the lifting of incipient drought status in six counties, while all others maintained normal conditions. That's good news for corn and soybean crops in the state, which has also seen few forest fires in recent weeks.
Lexington County joins agriculture and art tour
The 11-county tour begins May 29 and runs until June 27. The tour was started by the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service in 2012 to provide opportunities to learn about local agriculture and artisans.

The S.C. Department of Agriculture initiative, in its third year, has awarded nearly $500,000 to 35 agribusiness entrepreneurs. Applicants must have a business plan and a product prototype or sales history.
S.C. Food Hub Network helps distribute $1.3M in state-grown food
The network helped four state food distributors allocate more than $5 million in fresh food in 2020, including $1.3 million from S.C. farmers. The network coordinates resources for food hubs, which connect farmers to buyers.
Specialty crop program accepting applications
The S.C. program, part of the USDA's Specialty Crop Block Grant initiative, aims to enhance the market for specialty crops. Eligible projects should provide improved food safety or crop sustainability, among other benefits.
SC Green Industry Association to hold conference and trade show
The event, which will feature more than 70 exhibitors and nine industry speakers, will be held Jan. 28 and 29 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Up to $10,000 in college scholarships will also be awarded.

Fish farming company establishing Orangeburg operations
Pure Blue Fish, founded in 2016, raises yellowtail using recirculating aquaculture systems. Its new production and packaging facility is expected to be completed by 2022 and create 82 jobs.
Study shows South Carolinians are buying more local food
A study by USC economic researcher Joseph Von Nessen found that S.C. residents bought $176.3 million more in local food in 2018 than in 2010. That jump increased economic activity in the state by $273.5 million.
