Twenty-three S.C. communities will receive a share of more than $17.5 million in Community Development Block Grant funding for public improvement projects.

The S.C. Department of Commerce awards the funds, allocated annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, in the fall and spring of each year. Recipients are selected through a statewide competitive process, and local governments receiving funds must provide at least a 10% match.

Selected projects must meet at least one of three objectives: benefit low- to moderate-income individuals; aid in the prevention or elimination of blight; or meet other urgent community needs where existing conditions pose a serious threat to public welfare.

“In South Carolina, we work hard to ensure that economic development touches every corner of our state, and the CDBG program is an important tool in our arsenal for overall improvement,” S.C. Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt said in a news release. “To further attract investments to our communities, we need to preserve the remarkable quality of life that exists throughout our state, and these public projects are critical to doing just that.”

The projects, slated to benefit more than 27,700 S.C. residents, are:
