Savannah River Mission Completion Intern Discovers Her Passion for People

AIKEN, S.C. — Intern Marisabel Acevedo’s summer job perfectly suits her personality since she finds joy meeting new people on the job.

Through her summer internship in property management at Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), she has had the opportunity to meet many people from different organizations who have provided her with insight she can carry with her long after the internship ends.

While working with property management this summer, Acevedo has had the opportunity to travel all over the site labeling and taking inventory of government property. When she is sent to pick up items, she always makes sure to talk to everyone she can and soak up as much information as possible, according to Acevedo.

“Everyone around you has something to offer,” said Acevedo. “You never know who you might run into and how much a simple conversation in the hallway could end up meaning in the future.”

Acevedo grew up in Aiken, S.C., hearing about SRS her entire life. She will be graduating this fall from Clemson University and will pursue her career in management.

As a returning intern, she said that she is happy to be working at the Site in person this summer as her previous internship was remote during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Having my second internship here has allowed me to discover how much I enjoy engaging with people in the workplace,” said Acevedo. “Being back here in person has been a nice change from the isolation during Covid-19.”

Acevedo said this internship has opened her eyes to the way different organizations work together and how much professional relationships matter.

“I enjoy getting to see what everyone else does and how the groups function together,” said Acevedo. “I have had the opportunity to see the Site as a whole this summer rather than being confined to one area.”

After graduating, Acevedo wants to return to SRMC and continue her career in human resources management.

“The work that is done out here is incredibly impactful, and I want to continue to be a part of it,” said Acevedo. “SRMC’s work to protect the surrounding environment and communities is something I have always admired.”
