AIKEN, S.C.  — Summer interns and employees of Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), teamed up to repair a local Aiken resident’s house.

Last month, 17 SRMC summer interns, with the help and oversight of several full-time employees, volunteered to participate in the United Way of Aiken County’s Project VISION, a program that focuses on helping those in the community who cannot perform home repair projects themselves.

The group spent the day repairing a roof leak and replacing the porch floorboards that had been damaged as well.

Allison Brinkley, SRMC Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist and Intern Program Coordinator, said she enjoyed seeing students willing to volunteer and put SRMC’s core values into practice on their day off.

“One of the core values at SRMC is safety, and I always like how Project VISION demonstrates safety in action,” said Brinkley. “It teaches our interns the importance of safety and the importance of giving back, which contributes to our core value of continuous improvement.”

Willie Ouzts, an intern working with SRMC Engineering Programs, said he felt accomplished at the end of the day.

“My favorite part of the day was taking a look back at the hard work we had done,” Ouzts said. “We had completed a project while also learning new skills, engaging in teambuilding activities, and helping someone from our community at the same time.”

Intern Ashley Dogal, working in SRMC Design Services with the mechanical group, spent time getting to know the homeowner when taking breaks from the hard work.

“Talking to the homeowner was definitely a standout memory from the day,” Dogal said. “Hearing her different stories was a lot of fun.”

SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
