For the first time in his 60-year-career, Princess Diana’s favorite Official Royal Photographer and trusted companion, Anwar Hussein, shares the untold stories of Royal life and the Princess that we could not take our eyes off of and observed closely.

Accredited by the Royal Family, Anwar and his two sons, Samir and Zak, make up the longest-standing family of Official Royal Photographers, having collectively spent more than four decades working side by side with the iconic Princess and her family. Anwar, in particular, changed the way we see the Royal Family by taking casual photographs that captured the subjects’ lives and emotions.

Since launching in 2021, it has become a fan-favorite, being featured in People magazine, Variety, Access Hollywood, as well as the LA Times, and has accumulated a 4.9 out of 5-star guest rating.

BEATS Barre Studio Cuts Ribbon with Mayor Rickenmann on New Gervais Street Studio

Ribbon is cut on new BEATS Barre Studio, located at 1835 Gervais St. Suite C

BEATS Barre Studio — a fun and effective body-changing workout — has cut the ribbon on its new studio space. Owner Meredith Trout developed the one-of-a-kind workout method to blend four exercise areas into a high-energy class featuring mat work, low-weight arm series, dance cardio, and barre. To celebrate its grand opening, BEATS will host one week of free classes, October 2 – 7. Sign up for classes and explore memberships online at www.BEATSbarrestudio.com.

“I can’t emphasize enough that small businesses are essential to our community’s economic vitality and growth. Columbia is proud to support women-owned businesses like BEATS. They exemplify how the growth of local businesses makes Columbia a happier and healthier place to live,” said City of Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann.

The studio will host classes Monday – Saturday, and all weekday classes between 8:30 a.m. – noon will have childcare options. Located at 1835 Gervais St., Suite C the BEATS location offers free parking and bridges the space between the Vista and Five Points districts. Memberships and class packs are available for purchase through Mindbody at www.BEATSbarrestudio.com.

“I’m so grateful for the love and support from Columbia, which allows me to expand BEATS to this beautiful new space. I am so humbled by the chance to use my love of health and fitness to help and serve others in this capacity,” said Meredith Trout, BEATS owner and founder. “I am going to pour everything I can into infusing our studio with positive and joyful energy. I want to make sure each person who walks into a class knows they are seen and valued. Having the opportunity to build this community in Columbia means everything to me!”

What to expect at a BEATS fitness class
BEATS stands for burn, energize and tone sculpt, and the class is taught on the musical beat. Each component of a BEATS class is designed to impact different parts of the body incorporating both cardiovascular and deep muscle work to be fun! During mat work, pilates-inspired moves are elevated with the use of ankle weights. Heart rate increases during this portion to set the tone for a steady, intensified heart rate throughout the class. Arms and band work follow movement on the mat. High repetition with low weight allows BEATS to engage small accessory muscles to increase muscular endurance while limiting risk of injury. The heart rate slightly decreases during this portion of class to allow for a break before the next section, dance cardio.

BEATS infuses mat work, arms series, cardio dance and barre into one fun and effective workout

Simple-to-follow cardio moves make up the quick-paced dance cardio segment of class — the heart rate surges while letting loose and enjoying body movement. Bonus points — the coordination practice provides an extra brain boost. Finally, the class finishes with a barre section, giving each individual a good burn before continuing their day. The change and elevation of one’s heart rate for the length of the class increases fast-twitch muscle fibers and, in turn, increases calorie burn.

The routine and choreography changes every three weeks so the mind and body doesn’t plateau but still has the chance to learn and master the moves by the end of the cycle. The playlist is carefully curated to set the scene for a great class, from old-school jams to pop, techno dance, rap, trending songs and beyond. The distinctive method of BEATS yields a workout experience unlike any other while providing body-changing results.

“BEATS has truly changed my life. I have tried many different workouts, and this is the one that I can stick to consistently. I walk away from class feeling energized and encouraged — the best version of myself,” said Lindsey Griffin, Columbia Chamber 2022 Young Professional of the Year and owner of local Instagram account @colatownfoodieandfun. “Meredith and her team have your best interest at heart, and the BEATS community is unmatched. I have known Meredith for 20 years — and a driving force in her life has always been helping others be their best — inside and out. Columbia is so lucky to have this new resource for health and wellness.”

Developing the BEATS method
Trout has always had a passion for exercise. At an early age, dance and cheer gave her confidence and taught her that fitness can be fun and make you feel good. Throughout her life, Trout tried every kind of fitness class she could access — step, aerobics, kickboxing, barre, and more.

After the birth of her first son, she began training and completed 6 half marathons plus 1 full marathon in the span of 18 months. However, with a new baby, working, and experiencing some injuries from distance running, she sought new ways to get the same calorie burn and endorphin rush from running without the strain it puts on the body. After teaching several classes at her local YMCA, she began formulating her own method through mat work, dance fitness and ballet movement — the early beginnings of BEATS.

“I was hooked — it was so fun, the class went by quickly, and I was never ready to leave,” says Trout. “I still have that same passion for my classes today. I can’t get enough of it. If I could teach 10 classes a day, I would!”

Trout’s past experiences include teaching other styles of classes, allowing her to explore various methods and gain branded certifications. Through extensive research on exercise science, she began to refine a combination of techniques learned in these different classes. She also educated herself on methods gained from popular aerobic and dance fitness platforms, and she purchased every fitness DVD she could get her hands on. The more she learned, the more she understood the effectiveness of ancillary muscles in controlling strength and balance. Combined with cardiovascular work, it is unmatched in terms of overall fitness results.

The method was built to provide an effective and fun workout. It was designed to stand out — there is no other class locally that combines cardio dance, barre, mat work and small muscle focus the way BEATS does. The low-impact, high-repetition strategy of BEATS allows the method to be practiced at any age.

BEATS Barre Studio was launched in Lexington, N.C. in December 2018 with humble beginnings. Because of the effectiveness of the workout, it quickly grew in popularity. What began as a 10-foot barre in Trout’s basement has grown and evolved. In 2022, BEATS moved to Columbia, S.C. After teaching out of her home studio for over a year, Trout saw the opportunity to grow in Columbia.

The new Gervais Street location for BEATS marks a major milestone in the brand’s expansion. With great parking, a convenient location, and room for childcare, the new BEATS Barre Studio will allow membership and class offerings to grow to help even more people become energized by their fitness routines.

BEATS memberships and class packs are available
Becoming a BEATS member is easy. Through Mindbody online (or the app), BEATS offers unlimited monthly memberships, 10-class packs and individual classes. Class options include the signature 60-minute class and a 45-minute express option for those who need a timely workout while still seeing the same incredible results.

Retail brand Wear It To HEART leggings and BEATS merchandise will be sold in store. As part of its grand opening celebrations, all classes the first week of October (Oct. 2 – 7) are free. Register for class, become a BEATS member and learn more online at www.BEATSbarrestudio.com.

About BEATS Barre Studio
Founded in 2018, BEATS Barre Studio is a one-of-a-kind workout method that blends multiple areas of exercise into one high-energy class. The unique method was developed by BEATS owner and founder Meredith Trout as a culmination of more than 15 years of exercise research, dance training, conducting private personal training sessions and leading group fitness classes. The high-energy class is divided into sections, including —dynamic 360-degree moves on a mat; with ankle weights to elevate heart rate; high repetition, low-weight arm series to engage small accessory muscles; dance cardio for calorie burn; and barre to strengthen the core and lower body. Every aspect of the workout is carefully and intentionally put together, right down to the Gaiam dry-grip yoga mats and d-grip hand weights. BEATS is designed to actively engage every muscle group for an effective full-body workout that increases muscular endurance and fast-twitch muscle fiber, resulting in elevated calorie burn. Great music and positive energy are infused into the class to create an encouraging, fun and welcoming environment. Taught on the musical beat, the name also represents “burn, energize and tone sculpt.” The studio launched in Lexington, N.C. and moved to Columbia, S.C. in 2022, opening its first stand-alone studio in fall 2023. USC School of Accounting Presents BPS’s Thomas Pietras with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award

USC School of Accounting Chair Mark Cecchini presents BPS’s Tom Pietras with Lifetime Achievment Award.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – As far as Bauknight Pietras & Stormer, P.A. (BPS) shareholder Tom Pietras knew, he was simply attending the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Accounting’s Annual Advisory Board Fall Kick-off Event on September 14th at the Hall at Senate’s End. He was stunned when he was presented with the group’s highest honor, the Bubba Fennell Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I had no idea; I was totally shocked,” says Pietras, a USC alumnus and one of the original shareholders in BPS, a nationally recognized accounting firm headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina.

The award is given annually by the USC School of Accounting to an alumnus who has a long, distinguished career in accounting and has dedicated themselves to supporting the advancement of the accounting profession and the USC School of Accounting. Pietras was nominated and selected by a committee on the school’s advisory board.

Pietras graduated from USC in 1979 with a B.S. in Accounting. He earned his CPA license in 1981 and launched his career in public accounting with global accounting firm Ernst & Young (Arthur Young). After rising to senior manager, he joined a new accounting firm of six people in Columbia, BPS, in 1992 as a shareholder who would help lead the firm’s audit practice. Today, the BPS team of nearly 100 audit and tax professionals serves a stellar international, national and local client portfolio.

As if building a CPA firm wasn’t enough, Pietras served as an adjunct professor at the USC School of Accounting for 15 years, from 1996-2011, teaching a graduate level accounting course. He also served as a guest lecturer for USC’s entrepreneurial program. For many years, Pietras was also the point person for BPS recruiting efforts at Carolina.

Pietras is particularly proud of his recruiting duties. “I can’t count the number of USC accounting graduates and interns BPS has hired over the years. Some incredible people have come to BPS from Carolina and have helped drive our growth.”

Mark Cecchini, chair of the USC School of Accounting and associate dean of Executive Education at the Darla Moore School of Business, presented Pietras with the award and a framed print of the USC Horseshoe. “Tom was an easy choice for the Bubba Fennell Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s had a stellar career, making us look good! He has also been a boon to the City of Columbia, founding what is now the largest CPA office in the area. Tom’s also very easy to work with. Although he’s no longer teaching, he’s always ready to step in and help the School of Accounting and our students. Tom and his firm BPS are selling points for students considering whether or not to major in accounting.”

The newly expanded Emergency Department now encompasses a total of 39 beds with the addition of 13 beds and 13,000 square feet to patient care areas, increasing capacity by 33 percent with emphasis on improving the patient experience. Patients will access and receive care in the new space later this month.

Leaders attended the preview of the completion of phase one of the Prisma Health Tuomey Emergency Department. They included Mike Bundy, Prisma Health CEO, Midlands market; Susan Gaymon, Chief Nursing Officer, Prisma Health Tuomey; Sumter City Councilman Gifford Shaw; South Carolina Representative David Weeks ; Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives Murrell Smith; Sumter County Council Chairman Jim McCain; Sumter City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore James Blassingame; Office of US Senator Lindsey Graham Midlands Regional Director Laurie Traywick; Office of US Senator Tim Scott Regional Director Al Jenkins.

Mike Bundy, Prisma Health CEO for the Midlands market, said, “This much-anticipated expansion will ease wait times and overcrowding challenges in the emergency department, which is consistently one of Prisma Health’s highest volume emergency departments enterprise-wide.”

Susan Gaymon, chief nursing officer for Tuomey Hospital said, “For this community, it is so important to be able to provide a close-to-home access point to the vast range of world-class services available through Prisma Health.”

Over the last 10 years, the Tuomey Emergency Department averaged more than 50,000 visits annually, with a projection of over 55,000 visits in 2023. This expansion increases the capacity to provide emergency care to more than 65,000 patients a year.

As Phase 1 expansion work concludes, Phase 2 begins and includes a comprehensive renovation of the original emergency department, as well as a new grant-funded behavioral health crisis stabilization unit. Phase 2 is slated for completion in early 2024. Then, Phase 3 will complete the full transformation with upgrades to the current trauma space and adjoining hallway in late Spring, 2025.

The emergency medicine team, led by department chair Dr. Eric Wernsman, provides immediate evaluation and treatment to severely sick and injured patients who arrive for care 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. As the only emergency department serving several counties in that region, Prisma Health’s focus on community health services continues to improve access and clinical outcomes for patients in Sumter’s largely rural service area.

Local leaders had the opportunity to tour the expanded facility on Wednesday and learned more about the enhanced emergency department capabilities.

As the state’s largest healthcare provider, Prisma Health works with civic and community leaders to improve health outcomes for families and communities. An example of this partnership is a $9.1 million-dollar grant awarded by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to enhance behavioral health crisis stabilization services in the Tuomey Hospital Emergency Department. The effort to address this critical community need received support from South Carolina House of Representatives Speaker Murrell Smith (R–Sumter) and members of the Sumter County Legislative Delegation.
Regarding the emergency department expansion project, Representative Smith said, “Prisma Health’s expansion of the Tuomey Hospital emergency department is a true investment in Sumter and its surrounding communities. I am pleased to celebrate the milestone of the completion of the first phase of this important project that will have a lasting impact on the health and well-being of our citizens.”

Senator Thomas McElveen (D–Sumter) said, “I am thrilled and excited to see such a meaningful investment in the Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital emergency department that will ensure that people in Sumter and the surrounding areas will have increased access to emergent care for years to come. This is a landmark investment in Sumter that will enable our hospital to continue to grow along with our community and our evolving healthcare needs.”

Representative David Weeks (D–Sumter) said, “I join the people of Sumter in celebrating increased access to emergency healthcare services through the emergency department expansion at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.”

Peak Drift Brewing Company Celebrates First Certified SC Products in Partnership with McLeod Farms and Coosaw Farms

Peak Drift Brewing Company, an award-winning craft beverage company in Columbia, hosted a “Meet the Farmer” event with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture on Thursday, September 7, to announce Peak Drift’s first Certified South Carolina products. The new craft beers feature locally-sourced fruit from McLeod Farms and Coosaw Farms.

“Peak Drift has always been committed to being an eco-friendly operation that builds relationships with local farmers,” says Sara Middleton Styles, co-owner of Peak Drift Brewing Company. “Local is better — and our new Certified SC products with McLeod Farms and Coosaw Farms exemplify local collaboration and innovation that support our state’s farmers.”

Using its state-of-the-art in-house fruit processing equipment, Peak Drift used peaches from McLeod Farms and watermelon and blueberries from Coosaw Farms to create its newest seasonal beverages – the Peak Drift Peach Cobbler Sour Ale and the Peak Drift Watermelon-Blueberry Sour Ale.

“I commend Peak Drift for collaborating with farms right here in the Palmetto State,” says Hugh Weathers, South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture. “Agribusiness is a powerful driver of our state’s economy, and it’s good to see local agribusinesses working together. McLeod Farms and Coosaw Farms are valued Certified South Carolina members, and this is a great way to celebrate them.”

The Certified South Carolina program is an exciting cooperative effort among farmers, processors, wholesalers, retailers and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture that helps consumers easily identify goods that are grown and harvested or raised in the Palmetto State. Launched in 2007, the program has more than 2,000 agricultural producers as members.

“McLeod Farms, still family owned and operated, has been growing peaches in South Carolina since 1916,” says Rachel McCormick, marketing coordinator for McLeod Farms. “We have nearly 1,000 acres in production and grow more than 50 varieties of peaches. We’re proud of what we do and we’re ecstatic to have our product be the highlight of one of Peak Drift’s seasonal beverages.”

“Coosaw Farms has worked diligently to innovate in watermelon growing, becoming one of the leading mid-Atlantic watermelon producers in the U.S. today,” says Brad O’Neal, minority owner of Coosaw Farms. “We’re excited to bring our farm’s flavors to this new beverage — introducing Coosaw to people in a new and exciting way.”

The creation of the Peak Drift Peach Cobbler Sour and the Peak Drift Watermelon-Blueberry Sour are only the beginning for Peak Drift’s commitment to the Certified South Carolina program.. Peak Drift will continue to source as much fruit as possible from South Carolina farmers, including apples, peaches, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.

Peak Drift products are available in restaurants, bars and stores across the Midlands and Greenville area as well as at Smoked, which houses Peak Drift’s microbrewery. Peak Drift will continue to expand its products into additional markets this year and beyond.

Support Charleston students with Heart Math Tutoring this school year

Heart Math Tutoring (“HMT”) is a nonprofit organization committed to helping students in elementary schools develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics. After completing a successful year at Ladson Elementary and Matilda F. Dunston Elementary, HMT is excited to expand its impact to serve additional students at Sanders Clyde Creative Arts Elementary, and we need your help!

The Need for Math Support in Charleston
Just 54% of fourth grade students in Charleston County School District (CCSD) met or exceeded grade level expectations on 2022 SC College-and-Career-Ready Assessments. Tutoring has been found to deliver significant gains in recent studies and was recommended in the January 2021 report by the SC Education Oversight Committee upon reviewing South Carolina students’ academic needs exacerbated by the pandemic.

As an HMT tutor, your addition makes a difference! During the 2022/2023 school year, 98% of Charleston HMT students met or exceeded program growth goals in math. 100% of surveyed Charleston HMT tutors rated their experience positive and 96% of teachers reported they saw improvement in their student’s confidence and enthusiasm for learning on a year-end survey. The HMT program proved successful in Charlotte, NC before expansion to Charleston. See historical results here. (https://heartmathtutoring.org/what-we-do/results/)

Volunteering with Heart Math Tutoring
HMT volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions that last either 30 minutes or one hour from late September to early May (~20-25 sessions). Not a “math person”? Not a problem! Advanced math knowledge and tutoring experience are not required. All students are in grades 1-5, and Heart provides a structured, activity-based curriculum with on-site support at every session. If you can do basic math and have a passion for helping kids, you can tutor with HMT. Volunteer opportunities are available at three schools in Charleston County this year. We invite you to check out our school locations and available tutoring times. (https://heartmathtutoring.org/charleston/)

Already signed up to tutor? Please help Heart spread the word about this opportunity! See Heart’s “Recruit a Tutor” page for ideas on how to encourage your friends and colleagues to become a tutor. For employers and civic groups, our team would be happy to host an information session for interested employees and members. Please contact dave.smith@heartmathtutoring.org for more information!

About Heart Math Tutoring
Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) is a nonprofit with a mission to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Community members commit one hour per week to deliver an effective, hands-on curriculum through one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day in elementary schools. Heart focuses its support on students who lack resources to access private tutoring. Founded in Charlotte, NC, HMT launched its first new region, Charleston, SC, in 2022.
