Three S.C. DNR projects receive historic preservation funds

Listen to this articleThe S.C. Department of Natural Resources will use federal grants to support three projects eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places that were damaged during Hurricane Irma in September 2017.
S.C. DNR’s archaeology team was awarded three grants totaling $657,978 from the Emergency Supplemental Historic Preservation Fund for damage from hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, according to a news release from the department. The grants were awarded by the S.C. Department of Archives and History, which manages the funds for the National Park Service, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The projects to be funded by the grants include two on the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center Heritage Preserve in Georgetown County. The Gullah Geechee Fishing Village project will receive $207,978, and the Shoreline Survey project will receive $200,000.
The Pockoy Island Shell Ring Complex Archaeological Project on Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve in Charleston County will receive $250,000.
