Columbia’s BPS CPAs Named a South Carolina Best Place to Work

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Bauknight Pietras & Stormer, P.A. (BPS) has been named among the top ten in the 2023 Best Places to Work in South Carolina rankings conducted by SC Biz News. The announcement was made at a gala celebration held recently at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center honoring winners across three categories: small, medium and large employers. At number nine, BPS was the highest-ranking CPA firm in the medium-size company category.

Best Places to Work recognized 111 companies and organizations in three categories based on size. Honorees were chosen based on criteria established by the Best Companies Group. Nominees were required meet a minimum response rate on an employee survey to be considered. The employee survey was worth 75 percent of a company’s score with the employer survey worth 25 percent. One hundred percent of BPS’ team members participated in the survey, exceeding the participation requirement.

BPS Managing Shareholder Russell Bauknight says being named among the top ten employers in South Carolina is an incredible honor and invaluable in recruiting new team members, but the support BPS received from its people was incredibly humbling.

“The feedback provided in the survey was overwhelmingly positive. Reading the comments was a little emotional for me, having grown this firm from four people in 1991 to the nearly 100 that we employ today. It’s very challenging to establish and maintain a great culture for any business, but from the beginning, BPS put our people first. Public accounting is a demanding profession, and a lot of people aren’t up to the challenge. To make sure our people are sticky, we stress work-life balance, professional development, mentoring, financial and other incentives, plus social activities that make BPS much more than a job. It’s a career people enjoy and a workplace in which they thrive.”

He adds, “This honor and the comments from the employee survey validates the culture we’ve created is working and much appreciated.”

When asked how BPS could improve, the majority of respondents answered, “Nothing.”
