Walmart and Sam’s Club are among hundreds of retailers across the country who are accepting unused and expired prescription medication as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Sponsored and promoted by the Drug Enforcement Agency, the drug drop-offs allow people to safely dispose of unused, expired or unwanted prescription medications. Law enforcement officers will be accepting the drugs at retail locations and some participating law enforcement offices nationwide.

Throughout the Midlands, some CVS, Bi-Lo, and Walgreens stores also are participating in the drug take back day Saturday. Click here to find your nearest location.

Prescription drugs can be dropped off at participating locations between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

This year, the DEA also is accepting electronic vaping devices and cartridges but will not accept any device that contains lithium ion batteries.

The 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends and often stolen from a home medicine cabinet.
