ECPI University, with a campus in Columbia, has begun issuing digital degrees using blockchain technology. The service gives students control of their academic records, allowing them to share their degrees publicly or privately, and gives employers the ability to instantly check a student’s educational credentials.

ECPI, an institution accredited by the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges which offers accelerated associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, will begin issuing digital transcripts in 2019, according to a new release.

“This is the future of retaining your vital academic records independent of any issuing entity,” ECPI University chief information officer Jeff Arthur said in a news release. “You retain proof and control of your achievements indefinitely. Employers benefit from a process that allows them to quickly and easily verify educational histories on a resume. ECPI University is proud to be an early adopter and put an end to the archaic process of requesting a degree or transcript.”
