The COMET public transit system has 39 full-size buses that are now running on a B5 bio-diesel blend that is intended to improve air quality in the Midlands.

The B5 biodiesel vegetable oil-based and is biodegradable. It consists of up to 5% biodiesel and 95% petroleum diesel fuel but performs like diesel, according to a news release from The COMET.

The COMET is looking into increasing the rate of biodiesel to 20%, or B20, based on the success of B5, according to the release.

Compared to petroleum diesel, biodiesel produces less air pollutants and is biodegradable. It also smells like french fries because vegetable oil is the same oil used in deep fryers for food.

The Comet operates 81 buses on 38 fixed routes.

“Public transportation is a cornerstone of community vitality, sustainability and environmental stewardship. Since 2014 when The COMET started using propane, it is the intent to uphold these qualities through our commitment to sustainable practices, leadership principles and accessibility,” said John Andoh, executive director and CEO of The COMET.

The biodiesel fuel is provided by Petroleum Traders Corp. and James River Solutions.
