Initial unemployment claims top 5,000 in S.C.

Initial unemployment claims filed in S.C. for the week ending April 10 topped 5,000 for the first time in five weeks.

The state saw 5,045 claims filed, the most since 5,146 were filed for the week ending March 11, according to data from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

Richland County was one of two counties with more 400 claims filed in the most recent week with 409. Greenville County saw 445 claims filed.

Berkeley County had 378, Spartanburg County 369, Horry County 329 and Charleston County 290.

For the week of April 4-10, DEW paid out $67.2 million in a combination of state and federal unemployment benefits. Since March 15, 2020, the agency has paid out $5.8 billion.
