Contractors working on the reconfiguration of Interstate 26 will be closing lanes at night to work on the project, which begins near Exit 101 (U.S. 176) and extends to just west of Exit 85 (S.C. 202).

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is planning a major reconfiguration project on I-26 through Lexington, Richland and Newberry counties to improve traffic flow through the highly congested area.

Construction on the Carolina Crossroads project is scheduled to begin in spring 2020, with work scheduled to be completed by November 2023. The project will increase roadway capacity, improve safety and correct problematic areas of the highway and several interchanges and overpasses, according to a news release from SCDOT.

Plans include adding two travel lanes on I-26 in each direction between exits 101 and 97. Between exits 97 and 85, one lane will be added in each direction.  Improvements will be made to interchanges at exits 97 (U.S. 176) , 91 (S-48),  and 85 (SC 202). Overpass bridges will be replaced at Koon Road, Shady Grove Road, Mt. Vernon Church Road, Old Hilton Road, Peak Street, Holy Trinity Church Road and Parr Road.

The project contractor is currently closing lanes temporarily to perform various design activities, according to the SCDOT release. The closures will occur at night, with all travel lanes remaining open during the day.
