The final leg of the Special Olympics South Carolina’s Coast to the Capital Torch Run Relay will head down Columbia’s Main Street on Friday.

The torch run kicks off the S.C. State Summer Games, to be held Friday through Sunday at Fort Jackson.

The 127-mile Coast to the Capital Torch will begin at noon Thursday, when law enforcement officers from the Charleston will depart Sullivan’s Island with the Flame of Hope, according to Special Olympics South Carolina’s website. They will join Midlands-area officers at noon Friday to run down Main Street to the S.C. Statehouse.

At 6 p.m. Friday, officers from across the state will run the 7.5 miles from the Statehouse to Fort Jackson to light the Olympic cauldron.

More than 1,200 athletes are expected to compete in seven sports at the 2019 event, which will be held at Fort Jackson for the 51st year. Volunteer information is available online.
