The S.C. Department of Education has awarded more than $4 million in grants to 15 school districts and nonprofits serving 24 schools statewide.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grants fund after-school learning opportunities for students who need help outside of the classroom. The education department awarded $4.16 million for the 2019-2020 school year.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Community learning centers are developed with the funding to provide academic programs for children outside of school hours, particularly those who attend high-poverty or low-performing schools. The goal is to help students meet state standards in core academic subjects and provide educational enrichment opportunities and literacy programs, according to a news release.

School districts, schools, community organizations, tribal organizations, church-based organizations or nonprofits are eligible to apply.
