Richland County Library has received a $16,000 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to equip all of its branches with automated external defibrillators.

The devices and accessories will be installed through the beginning of April, according to a news release from the library.

The defibrillators can provide immediate medical assistance to cardiac arrest victims, improving their survival rates. Designated Richland Library staff are taking part in training and obtaining a two-year certification to operate the equipment to help protect the more than 40,000 people who visit the library’s branches each month, the release said.

Richland Library has a staff of nearly 1,000 members and volunteers, including a Safety and Security Department made up of a 12-year veteran police officer, 14 full-time and 13 part-time positions.
